Interview with Terri Pecora

Leading bathroom brand VitrA has collaborated with Milan-based American designer, Terri Pecora, to create a striking new collection that was unveiled at Salone del Mobile this year.

We’re delighted that VitrA will be bringing the collection to designjunction this September. Celebrating wellness and the joy of spending time in the bathroom, Plural is inspired by the heritage of communal bathing spaces and rituals, introducing the bathroom as a social hub where people meet and reconnect with themselves, their close friends and family.

To find out more, this week we spoke to Terri about the collection, hearing about her background as a designer, where she finds inspiration and how Plural has been her most exciting project to date.

What inspired you to become a designer? Where does your drive come from?

I first noticed design as a young girl growing up in Southern California while playing at friends’ modern style, indoor-outdoor houses. It was love at first sight for me. My inspiration today comes mainly from the art world, but also, my personal experience: I like contemplating new and better ways of doing things.

You’ve worked across multiple design disciplines – fashion, graphics, product design – what do you enjoy the most?

My true love is product design. I love seeing something abstract become reality through the long and arduous process of production.

You’ve worked with some very high-profile design brands Edra, Zanotta, Bisazza to name a few. What has been the most exciting project you’ve worked on and why?

It might sound like I’m making this up…..but my most exciting project to date is Plural: I was inspired to work with such a large team of professional people at VitrA. It’s always a give and take process: you have to be creative and think fast on your feet to find the right compromises and solutions within the realities of production. The company and the people who work there are an interesting blend of technology and sophistication, melded with the emotion of their ancient territory. (For an American living in Italy, this is a win win characteristic!) Finally, it was a very long process, beginning with a purely conceptual project, which developed into a functional innovative product line.

Your new collection is more akin to furniture pieces than traditional bathroom items. Where did the inspiration come from?

I like the idea of lounging in the bathroom, spending time there to read or relax. So I think the furnishings we use there should reflect that idea and be warm and inviting. Relaxed and comforting.

Can you tell us more about your new collection for VitrA?

The Plural collection celebrates a new modern ritual, a contemporary version of shared bathing spaces. I like to call it ’Shared intimacy.

The collection has five key aspects:

    –  ORIENTATION AND A NEW PERCEPTION IN THE BATHROOM: a new ‘experience’ in the lay-out of a bathroom. Sinks can be positioned at different angles and not just looking straight on towards the wall. When you’re not looking straight at the wall, you can look around and interact in your space, with who you are there with.

    –  DOMESTICITY AND HANGING OUT TOGETHER: this is a group of elements that could almost be in any area of the home and are meant to be used together, not simply alone. They are coloured and textured elements used with furniture normally not associated with the bathroom. it’s a very furniture oriented project and the bathroom becomes a more ‘living space’ than a sanitation space. In this space one can ‘hang out’ doing things not only associated with the common bathroom.

    – GROUPING AND LAYERING ELEMENTS: the elements of the collection work together in overlapping heights. There is even the possibility to group three sinks together in a central group – a contemporary ’nod’ to communal sinks used in public washing spaces throughout the world.

    – TACTILE AND NEUTRAL COLORS – THE ‘NON-WHITENESS’ OF THE NEW BATHROOM: the collection is all about ‘experiencing’ multiple finishes and colours, it’s not your ‘typical’ cold white bathroom!

    – TECHNICAL INNOVATION: there are new syphon elements allowing the sinks to be set at angles and free standing. Tubes are ‘normally disorganised and unsightly’ – here we have designed them into an orderly and ‘finished’ system on the wall or floor.
