2020 was the year we spent more time at home than ever before. The importance of outdoor space, greenery and calming décor quickly became apparent with our living environments also becoming our space for work, play and holiday. As we move into 2021, the three key design trends that we will see more are a reflection of the events of 2020, as we continue to prioritise our home surroundings and create safe sanctuaries.
Biophilia
Biophilia is the integration and inclusion of nature as a focal point – with lavish, well cared for greenery, natural wood finishes and subtle shapes and colours. A biophilic bathroom design features shapes and colours that have a relationship with the great outdoors. Various ferns and air plants like Tillandsia will thrive in humid bathrooms. Succulent plants (plants that store water in their leaves) also love bathrooms. To complement glossy leaves and foliage, white remains the top choice for sanitaryware – but splashes of subtle colour can be added with vessel basins. The return to the full-colour suite may not be around the corner, but a subtle hint of colour in a soft earth tone adds character and distinction to a bathroom.
Bathscaping
Bathscaping involves super-styling the bathroom into a relaxing haven, using lots of plants, candles, mood lighting and small accessories. Using clutter-free storage solutions will also create a peaceful atmosphere – something everyone is seeking after the stressful ups and downs of 2020.
The connection between water, wellbeing and nature has never been easier. Waterfall showerheads, walk-in showers and statement baths all create a feeling of luxe.
Hygiene
Cleanliness is very much in our thoughts and products that offer hygienic benefits will be key in 2021. Clever features such as sanitaryware glazes that prevent bacteria growth and rimless toilet designs will be more popular than ever before.
Shower toilets, such as the VitrA V-Care range, will be seen in more and more British bathrooms thanks to their unrivalled hygiene and comfort advantages. There are many benefits to shower toilets – the hands-free cleaning is hygienic and helps to stop the spread of illnesses, plus the cleaning and drying functions negate the need for toilet paper.
